Nominations for the "Hottest Barbie® of 2003" came from all over the world this year, including votes from the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Canada, Australia and Sweden, just to name a few!  Thanks again for your overwhelming response! Our winners all came from the Barbie Collectibles line, edging out Play Line doll nominations.  Nomination criteria:  To win the "Hottest Barbie® of 2003", she had to be the 2003 line Barbie doll that made you (and Ken®) say (out loud) "Man, she's hot!" (when looking at her).  Even though the Barbie® doll may be technically in the 2004 line, if she was available for sale in 2003, she can be considered.

Special thanks to Madison from Magma Heritage, who is providing the fabulous pictures again this year of our winners! Without further ado, our list of winners...

WINNER "Hottest Barbie® of 2003"

Barbie®, from Jude Deveraux "The Raider" Barbie & Ken Gift Set

Mattel writes:  Barbie is featured wearing a violet blue dress that falls off her shoulders. She has long blond, tousled hair. The neckline trimmed in white lace and the violet blue taffeta bodice is boned and fitted. It laces up the front in lilac satin ribbon to finish in a bow just under the bust. An overskirt of periwinkle chiffon is pulled up at the left hip to reveal a very full underskirt of violet blue floral jacquard. A sash of teal iridescent chiffon falls around the edge of the overskirt. A small bouquet of lilac and white flowers covers the area where the two chiffon fabrics come together. Ken has brown, long, and windswept hair. He is wearing a sheer white cotton shirt and tight, black pants accented with a black belt. Black knee high cuffed and buckled boots complete his ruggedly handsome look.

Jude Deveraux "The Raider" Barbie® & Ken® Gift Set

Categorized under the "Fantasy Dolls" collection, this LE gift set capitalizes on the strong base of romance novel fans and has a strong tie to a best-selling romance novel, The Raider, written by one of America's most beloved romance authors, Jude Deveraux. This gift set brings romance and love with the first gift set to feature Barbie and Ken as romance novel characters.

I bought this set for the Ken, but was in awe of the sultry Barbie.  Cami, a collector who voted for Raider Barbie said "In my opinion, she's the clear choice for Hottest Barbie 2003...she oozes sensuality."

Hottest Barbie® of 2003 "Runner(s)-Up" (There was a TIE in this category)

Barbie® 2003

Tatu™ Barbie®

There was a dead on tie for runner-up this year.  "I think Barbie 2003 symbolizes everything a collector wants in a Barbie.  All the elegance and sophistication required is represented...right down to her accessories," wrote Lisa from Canada.  A CE in the "Special Occasion" Barbie Collectibles category, Barbie® 2003 wears a lavender gown that goes over one shoulder to create an elegant look. The bodice of the gown has shiny, silvery caviar beading. She also wears a dark lavender organza floor length wrap trimmed at the bottom with taffeta. Her hair is pulled back into an elegant low ponytail that is curled on the bottom. She wears silvery flower dangle earrings. Her rhinestone brooch reading “2003” is on the shoulder of the gown.  (A LE redheaded version of Barbie® 2003 was limited to 2500 dolls worldwide).

Although I loved the winner this year, my personal vote this year went to this doll.  "She has sass with class", wrote Rob from the UK.  I couldn't agree more! A LE from The Treasures of Africa™ Collection by Byron Lars comes Tatu™ Barbie® doll, wearing a black and tan woven jacket lined in tricot, and accented with five silvery buttons down the front. The back of her jacket is bare with a silvery cord that laces and ties. Accompanying her jacket is a bronze green shantung skirt that splits at the side. A golden chain belt accented with an African mask draws attention to her skirt. Draping across this doll's left arm is a leopard print stole backed in a lace print. Her dark brown hair has tight curls with beading accents. Accessories include an intricate necklace, earrings, and a bracelet, all accented by golden quill extensions.

Hottest Barbie® of 2003 "Honorable Mention"

March Aquamarine Barbie®

Competing against 11 other girls in her category alone, there was something about the March Wal-Mart SSE Birthstone doll that caught your eye.  I found it interesting that this doll (being one part of a series of 12) gathered enough votes to make "Honorable Mention".  For the people who voted for this doll, many of you said that March wasn't even your birth month and you just bought the doll because it was your favorite.  Mattel writes:  Our tribute to the March birthstone reflects the glorious hues of the aquamarine and brings happy wishes for your very special birthday month. March Aquamarine™ Barbie® doll wears a spectacular gown trimmed with chiffon and sparkling with glitter. A lovely stole wraps around her shoulders. The faux aquamarine pendant on her necklace is actually a glittering Swarovski® crystal.

Congratulations to all of our 2003 winners!

See you next year as I continue with the Hottest Barbie® of 2004!

 "Hottest Barbie® of 2002".

The Lingerie Barbie® #5

The Barbie® Fashion Model Collection unveils its first-ever African-American Silkstone™ doll, the fifth Lingerie Barbie® doll. By early Holiday 2002, she became the catalyst for news reporters hounding for an immoral angle.  Her name appeared in several major newspapers stories, and was discussed on television shows like "The View" and even by Katie Couric on NBC's "Today Show".  When John Stossel from ABC's 20/20 reported on her, it was time for me to say "gimme a break".

Probably the most ridiculous article about her was written by Deborah Roffman for the Washington Post, who teaches human sexuality at the Park School of Baltimore. She is the author of "Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parent's Guide to Talking Sense About Sex" (Perseus Books).  Her skewed "thinking parent" comparison between The Barbie® Fashion Model Collection and "soft porn", made me give Deborah a special "The 2002 Person We'd Most Like To Get A Clue Award".  If you can stomach reading her article, the link is here.

Amazingly, Roffman replied to the Barbie® Collecting community with this response:

Thank you for taking the time to write about the article I wrote in the Washington Post in such detail. I have heard from many adult Barbie collectors and I am sending the following response to you and others.

I can see by your passion that Barbie Collectables provide you and others with a very enjoyable hobby and one that you take very seriously. My intention was not to criticize or belittle you, nor to cast blame on any individual or individuals.  I can understand, however, how you reacted the way that you did.

I hope you will feel reassured to know that of all the many people who have written me about the article, no one has mentioned anything disparaging about, or in fact anything at all about, Barbie collectors, or even about the Barbie line self. If you read the article in its entirety, you will see that I squarely place the problems we are facing on larger issues relating to culture, families and schools, and that apparently is the way people have interpreted it.

As a Barbie devotee, you and others should be aware that parents and educators everywhere are truly angry about this product. In my experience their immediate and gut reaction when they hear about it is that Mattel has crossed a line that is totally unacceptable. Mattel is a company that is associated primarily in their minds with children, and that makes it different from other kinds of companies that are perceived as simply merchandizing outlets.

Mattel has brought this scrutiny on itself, at best either by not realizing that the average consumer will not be privy to the details about Barbie Collectables of the kind you have provided in your emails, or by not understanding that parents in today's world are for good reasons feeling extremely overwhelmed and undermined at every turn. At worst, Mattel is, or is at least giving the appearance that it is, merely cashing in on the Tweens" and the "let's use sex to sell everything" phenomena that are very real in our society.

As an example of the latter, I'd ask you to compare the increasingly blatant sexual connotations in the advertising copy for the newer Lingerie Barbie Dolls to the copy for the original Lingerie Barbie Dolls marketed in 2000. It is also interesting to note that fully six out of the twenty-seven dolls shown on the Mattel web site in the Barbie Fashion Model Collection (the last time I (checked) are variations of Lingerie Barbie. To the average person viewing the site, that is an exceedingly high percentage (more than 20%).

Although I am aware that Barbie Collectables are primarily manufactured and marketed for adults, please be aware as well that at the FAO Schwarz store in Manhattan that I recently visited, this doll was shelved in a location at eye level and completely accessible to anyone walking by. There was absolutely no indication that adults were the intended audience.

I ask you to entertain the possibility that it is the Mattel Company and its marketing policies that have brought on this controversy, not the upset of those who reacting to it.

Again, thank you for writing.

Sincerely,

Debbie Roffman

Lingerie or sexuality wasn't a factor when deciding to bestow the honor of "Hottest Barbie® of 2002" to The Lingerie Barbie® #5 .  I'm smart enough to realize she's just a doll (and that's without a Journalism or Human Sexuality degree).  Sorry immoralists, The Lingerie Barbie® #5 wins top honors here!

Hottest Barbie® of 2002 "Runner-Up"

Society Girl™ Barbie® AA

She’s a big city girl with a hot, happening life! She’s everywhere that’s anywhere – she’s Society Girl™ Barbie® doll.

If you love snob appeal made downright alluring down to the last detail, this is the doll for you! Two versions were available, but the African American one was way better! Perfected facial details and the dramatic black hair made her look vibrant.  Society Girl™ AA was such a close runner-up to the winner, she had to mentioned here.  A true class act.
